Reader’s Question:

I definitely need help in reducing my auto insurance rates here in Illinois, anything you can advise me with?

Hamza

Springfield, IL

Car insurance companies will provide you a quote after taking into account all factors that cover it. There are some things that you can do to reduce what you pay for your auto insurance. At times, even the slightest adjustment can give you big savings. The foremost important thing that you can do to reduce your auto insurance rates is to take care of your driving record. Try as much as you can to maintain a good driver status by avoiding accidents, DUI citations, moving violations and speeding tickets. Things like this, especially being charged with DUI, will definitely increase your auto insurance premiums.

Another important thing to take care of is your credit history. This may not always directly affect your auto insurance premiums but you have to pay attention to it nevertheless. Your credit history can be looked at by auto insurance companies to see the kind of person that you are. This may decide whether you would have to pay all at once or you can be given the privilege to pay it on a monthly basis.

Lastly, and often overlooked by most consumers, you can reduce your auto insurance payment if check various insurers. Ask different auto insurance quotes from them and compare them to find the most affordable one that has the best value.

Reader’s Question:

They took my driver’s license away because of my DUI and now that the revocation period is almost over, I need to have a new driver’s license here in Illinois but I also need SR22 filing, how do I do that?

Angelo

Waukegan, IL

Because your Illinois driver’s license has been revoked, you have to work your way in getting SR22 insurance filing so that you can have a new driver’s license. SR22 insurance is a form that is being added to a car insurance policy and is being required for those who have been convicted for driving under the influence (DUI) or for those who have had a driver’s license suspension or revocation for some other reasons.

SR22 insurance filing needs to be done by your car insurance company to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). If you are not currently insured, you have to find a car insurance company that does SR22 insurance filing. You may get a hard time finding a car insurance company that will insure you because of your status as a high risk driver, but there surely is one that would be willing to do SR22 insurance filing for you but at a higher price than what you used to pay for your car insurance.

Through SR22 insurance filing, your car insurance company guarantees the DMV that you have at least auto liability insurance. Remember that you have to maintain this for a specific amount of time because if not, the DMV would have to suspend your driver’s license until you show them that you have SR22 insurance filing again.

Reader’s Question:

Where do insurance companies base their rate quotes? I reside here in Peoria, Illinois and has been doing some research on car insurance to help my wife get good car insurance prices.

Mathew

Peoria, IL

Your car insurance rates are based on a number of factors and not all car insurance providers use the same system or process to determine your auto insurance premiums. Some of these factors are controllable and some you will just have to live with if you want to get car insurance coverage. Generally, car insurance rates are based on the following factors: Age, Gender, Driving record, where you live and the kind of car you own.

The younger the driver (teenagers to early 20s) the more inexperienced he/she is considered by the insurance company thereby presenting a higher risk as a driver than a more established drivers. Those above 55 years, however, may also be seen as a high risk driver due to the physical limitations (slower reflexes, poorer eyesight etc.,) imposed by advancing age.

Males are, statistically, more prone to get into car accidents than women. Your location, where you live, work and drive each day, as well as the popularity of your type of vehicle among thieves, also affects your rates since insurance providers will be taking into account the crime and theft rates of vehicles in that area. The factor that you have most control of would be your driving history there in Peoria, Illinois. Prior involvement in car accidents, accumulating traffic violations and getting caught driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) has a very big impact on how much you pay for insurance.

Reader’s Question:

I know someone who has been charged with DUI here in Illinois. He’s in trial right now and by the looks of it, he will be convicted but he’s lawyer is doing everything to at least shorten the jail time and reduce the fines. I wanna make sure that the same thing will not happen to me. I don’t deny that I have been drunk or maybe drove under the influence of alcohol once or twice. What advice could you give me if I will be caught drunk driving?

Jackie

Springfield, IL

It is unlawful to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs in Illinois. It is strongly advised that people should not drive alone while in an intoxicated condition. Drivers who are caught doing this are charged with a criminal offense. It is very important that you know what to do if you are stopped by a patrol officer on a DUI suspicion.

In case you can’t avoid drinking and getting behind the wheel, you should have a favorable witness along with you in your car. Eye drops should be applied to mask bloodshot eyes, which strongly imply a person’s drunken condition. If you will be caught drunk driving, you should not take a portable breath test or any field sobriety tests (FST) while in an intoxicated condition because you are not required by law to do so. You should also indicate that you are confused about your legal rights. You should be advised by the officer to ask for a lawyer before questioning and after Miranda warnings are given. You should not information as to how much you have been drinking and what you were drinking. All implied consent warnings should be fully read to you by the police officer. You should also be polite and courteous regardless of how rude a police officer may be towards you. While blowing into the Breath analyzer, you should not blow hard because blowing hard may reflect a higher than normal reading.

Lastly, if in any unavoidable circumstance that you will be charged with DUI, make sure that you consult and hire an experienced Illinois DUI lawyer to give you detailed advice, to represent you, and to make sure everything will be done for you to avoid serving in jail and hefty fines.

Reader’s Question:

My 20-year old teenager son just received a DUI in Illinois for the first time. How will this affect my insurance rate and his since his insurance is also under my policy with him as driver?

Pam

Chicago, IL

Too bad for you, but DUI is a serious offense in Illinois and is classified as a violent crime. Unfortunately, this offense will permanently remain on his driving record. He may lose his driving privileges and can either be imprisoned or fined.

This offense is also taken very seriously by any insurance company since the driver becomes a risk to them compared to a person with a clean driving record. This would likely increase his rate which can affect the whole policy, including your premium rates.

A DUI can subject yours to high-risk auto insurance rates for three years according to the Illinois Secretary of State. The IL SOS DUI Fact Book states that high risk insurance for a driver convicted of DUI averages an additional $1500 per year!

However, since insurance companies rating systems are not the same, it is better that you find out more from your insurance agent as to how much the increase will be and for how long.

But you don’t always need a Chicago DWI lawyer. Sometimes it really is up to you. While I still think that everybody with a DUI should hire a lawyer, sometimes you really just don’t have that option or are confident in yourself to forgo it. Still, if this is the case for you, only pass on a lawyer if the offense is small enough to not warrant a huge punishment.

Reasons why you could (or could not) decide to get a Chicago DWI lawyer.

you may need someone to do some explaining to you. The books on DWI laws are pretty thick, and so it’s important to get your information from somebody who knows what’s going on.

the place you work at may require bonding.

you may be part of an education program to get a professional license which, if you are convicted, could be restricted to you.
